Rise In Ohio Nursing Home Abuse
The Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine has announced that there has been a rise in nursing home abuse and neglect complaints to the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit. In 2013, the Attorney General’s office has opened over 130 cases relating to nursing home abuse, while the same time period in 2012 only saw 74 cases.
There have been 63 cases opened just since June after DeWine announced that authorities would be looking into Ohio nursing home and abuse more aggressively.
DeWine explained that he believed that most of Ohio’s facilities were in fact providing adequate care to residents, but they were to “go after the facilities that cause harm to their residents and [authorities] will use in-room hidden cameras if necessary.”
Our office is pleased to know that authorities are taking this issue more seriously. Nursing home abuse stories are among the worst that we hear, as loved ones are taken advantage of by people meant to be giving them care. While the number of ongoing cases currently in Ohio is disconcerting, it is good to know that something is being done to help those affected by such negligence.
