Operation “Ohio Knows”
On Monday, October 4, the Ohio Attorney General announced the progress made by “Operation ‘Ohio Knows’”. The operation was a collaborative sting effort targeting sex trafficking in the state, lasting from September 24 to October 1.
“Human trafficking, particularly sex trafficking (the illegal use of vulnerable people to make a profit through sex work), is an issue that the Toledo Police Department takes very seriously,” said Captain Joseph Heffernan of the TPD. “The Toledo Police Department has been a partner with the FBI’s Human Trafficking and Child Exploitation Task Force for many years combating these types of crimes. By targeting those involved in this crime, we hope to disrupt this activity and provide assistance to human trafficking victims by getting them connected to advocates and resources. We are happy to partner with the Ohio Attorney General’s Office and other law enforcement agencies throughout Ohio in participating in Operation Ohio Knows.”
The operation led to the arrest of 161 individuals for different charges of varying severities, from drug and firearm charges to buying sex with a minor. Among those arrested were an Elyria Councilman, municipal employees, a pilot, a professor, a firefighter, and a schoolteacher.
51 human trafficking victims were also identified and referred to counseling services. A simultaneous effort by US Marshalls also helped find 10 missing children.
