2 Killed, 3 Hurt In Fostoria Minivan Crash
Anupama Mandal was pronounced dead at the scene. She was a passenger in the minivan driven by her husband Atmesh Kumar. Ebhay Kumar was pronounced dead after being transported to nearby Fostoria Community Hospital.
The crash occurred just after 6 p.m. at the intersection of State Route 199 and Stearns Road, just north of the Fostoria city limits.
Mr. Kumar, Ebhay’s twin brother, Amar, and their 11-year-old sister Adya, were flown by medical helicopter to Toledo Hospital and Toledo Children’s Hospital.
Mr. Kumar was upgraded from critical to fair condition late Wednesday afternoon. Amar and Adya, though, remain in critical condition, a Toledo Hospital spokesperson said.
According to state troopers, the minivan was traveling east on Stearns when it failed to stop at a stop sign at State Rt. 199. Mr. Kumar drove the van into path of semi, which was was headed north on 199.
The UPS tractor-trailer, operated by Roger Watts of Waterville, broadsided the van on the passenger side, killing two occupants of the back seat.
“It doesn’t appear the UPS driver did anything wrong,” said Ohio Highway Patrol Sgt. Doug Pratt. “It doesn’t appear speed was an issue on his part, just a failure to yield on the mini-van’s part.”
Highway patrol investigators also stated icy roads were not a factor, even though sections of roadway in the area were slick from blowing and drifting snow.
