Boyk Law Sponsors Dream Bedroom for Kid Fighting Cancer
Charles Boyk Law sponsored a Dream Bedroom Makeover with Special Spaces Toledo for a local boy fighting cancer. Special Spaces was started with its first makeover in Knoxville, Tennessee, in 2004. Their goal is to give kids diagnosed with cancer a space to heal and spend time away from the challenges of their illness. The custom bedrooms are designed just for them and created to accommodate the child’s interests and needs, and the makeovers are made possible with teams of volunteers, sponsors, and donated goods and services.
Special Spaces has 12 chapters in 10 states, and Patti DeHenning is the founder of the Toledo chapter. “My sister is the Special Spaces chapter director in Boca Raton,” says Patti. “During a visit, I was able to experience the joy of giving a Dream Bedroom to a child with cancer. I started
Special Spaces Toledo Chapter in 2017, and we have been blessed to give 16 local children a Dream Bedroom Makeover. The 17th room was for Roman, who was recommended to us by the Cancer Connection, a non-profit that helps families fighting a cancer diagnosis.”
Patti designed a bedroom for Roman, who was diagnosed with T-cell leukemia in May 2020. This project was uniquely challenging because there are nine children in the home, and Roman shares his bedroom with six brothers. All the children in the house got new beds, bedding & decor.
The Boyk Law team pre-assembled three bunk bed units in the Boyk Law Holland office so they could be easily set up on the unveiling day. Boyk
volunteers also
helped with painting, cleaning, and moving bedroom furniture on Friday, November 4th, and then set up and decorated the bedrooms on Saturday before the “big reveal.”
