Another Drugmaker Pays Millions Due To Patient Injuries
The drugmaker Hoffman LaRoche has been found by a New Jersey jury to pay over $1.5 million to a woman who suffered injury due to one of the company’s products. The case is highlighted in the JereBeasley Report.
Hoffman LaRoche’s Accutane acne medicine caused the woman to form inflammatory bowel disease. In the trial, the jury found that the drugmaker did not warn doctors appropriately. The Accutane medicine caused the woman’s ulcerative colitis and the company is liable for the injuries she sustained.
Accutane Causes Serious Injury
Accutane went on the market in 1982 and approximately 16 million people that have taken the drug since. The patent protection on the drug was lost in 2002 but Hoffman LaRoche continued to sell the drug.
Accutane has been linked to the following:
- Bowel disease
- Birth defects
- Depression
Accutane Lawsuits
The above New Jersey Accutane case is the second to have gone to trial. In 2010, an appeals court in New Jersey overturned a $10.5 million verdict because the judge was found to have improperly barred Hoffman LaRoche from using evidence regarding the use of Accutane.
There have been 13 lawsuits brought on by individuals who used Accutane and the drugmaker has lost 10 of those lawsuits.
One user of Accutane began using the product at age 12 due to severe recalcitrant nodular acne. The user developed ulcerative colitis at age 15 and her colon was removed in 2006 at age 21.
Accutane Pulled from Market
Hoffman LaRoche pulled the drug from the market in 2009 after millions were awarded to former users of Accutane.
