Malina Wiltshire is Boyk Law’s New Litigation Paralegal

By the nature of her job title, Malina Wiltshire gets involved once a lawsuit (litigation) is filed. She communicates with clients and opposing counsel. Her responsibilities include drafting discovery responses, scheduling depositions, reviewing court dockets and ensuring that Chuck Boyk has everything he needs for his cases. “I also review medical records to make sure that we have all of the necessary documents to try to resolve the case,” says Malina.

“Chuck is very intelligent. He really knows what he’s talking about,” says Malina. “He’s a go-getter. Let’s get this settled. Let’s do this now.”

Malina says she also enjoys having a strong support team because it allows her time to help clients. “I enjoy talking with clients and answering their questions”.

She remembers developing an early fascination with law. “When I was younger, I actually used to go to my aunt’s office. She worked as a legal secretary for Spengler Nathanson Law in downtown Toledo. She didn’t have any daughters, so she always took me with her on “Take Your Daughter to Work” day. So, when I was 10, 11, and 12 years old, I got to see what she did, and I always thought it was interesting.”

Despite her early introduction, she didn’t initially pursue a career in law. “I started going to the University of Toledo for education, to become a pre-K through third-grade teacher,” she explained.
“Then one day I realized, I don’t want to do this. And I remembered those early experiences with my aunt, and I changed my major to Paralegal Studies.”

Malina completed her degree at Stautzenberger College and then went on to work for two other prominent personal injury firms over the past 18 years. She gained extensive experience before accepting a position with Charles Boyk Law Offices. “I know some people who work here or have worked here,” says Malina. “When I saw the job posting, they told me I should send in my resume, because I would be a good fit… Now, I really like the warm, relaxed atmosphere.”

“The big positive here is the teams. Each attorney has a team, and each person on that team has a specific role, but everybody works together, and it just kind of flows well. And I really, really like that.”

She grew up in Sylvania and attended Northview High School. Now her sons are attending the same school.

“I have three kids,” says Malina. “My boys go to Northview High School. I have a senior and a freshman, and then my daughter is going to the Toledo School for the Arts. So, my free time is basically spent doing what they need to do. So, I watch hockey. You’ll always see me in a hockey rink.

“My youngest, my daughter, is a dancer,” says Malina. “She dances for the Toledo Ballet. She dances in about three or four productions a year, so we’re at the studio a lot.”

Malina doesn’t have much time for hobbies when she isn’t hanging out at the hockey rink or ballet rehearsals and recitals. “No, my hobby is kind of just relaxing. When I am finally able to have peace and quiet, I take advantage of that, for sure, because we’re so busy. So I enjoy being able to just, you know, sit on the couch and binge-watch a crime show on Netflix.”

She has adopted two dogs from friends who were relocating, Gabby and Loretta. “Gabby is a beagleretriever mix who was previously owned by my best friend’s dad, who was selling his house. Loretta is a Maltese, and we were gifted her two years ago from a family friend who was moving to Florida.”

Malina loves seeing dogs in the Boyk Law office. “I thought it was amazing. I want to bring in Loretta…I think it helps the atmosphere. It’s different, you feel different. When you’re stressed, and then you hear a dog bark, and you’re like, oh, yeah, I can go and say hi. It’s a good feeling.”
