Bayer Sets Aside Funds For Lawsuit Settlements

With approximately 4,800 cases against Bayer, the company will be paying out more than $1 billion to those that claim injuries from Yaz and Yasmin birth control pills. The complications involved with these birth control pills include the following:

  • Blood clots
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Stroke
  • Gallbladder disease

Mediation between both sides continues, but at this time Bayer has begun to open the door to negotiations with the women that are claiming to have gallbladder disease from the birth control pills.

Most of the lawsuits against the company deal with blood-clot related injuries, but there is a growing amount of women claiming gallbladder complications. The conditions related to this involved the following:

  • Inflammation
  • Abdominal pain
  • Jaundice
  • Fever
  • Gallstones

Many of these complications require surgery and removal of the gallbladder.

How does birth control affect the gallbladder?

You may be asking yourself how birth control pills affect the gallbladder. The answer is that the gallbladder has estrogen receptors in it which attracts cholesterol. Additional estrogen may increase the cholesterol in the gallbladder and then increase thickening bile in the gallbladder. This bile may cause gallstones and inflammation.

Progestin also inhibits the gallbladder from releasing bile, which then builds up and increases the risk for gallstones.
