Gadolinium Contrast Agent Complications

There is a concern that the use of GBCAs can result in gadolinium toxicity, Gadolinium Deposition Disease, and Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis.
Gadolinium Deposition Disease (GDD) causes patients to suffer fibrosis (a thickening and scarring of connective tissue) in organs, bones, and skin. Gadolinium can also be retained in the brain.

The following symptoms are the most common:

  • Intense burning of the skin.
  • Intense deep pain in bones or joints.
  • Brain fog.
  • Muscle vibrations and pins and needles/tingling in skin.
  • Severe Head pain.
  • Arm and leg skin/skin thickening, discoloration, and pain.Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) is a debilitating and deadly disease that causes the skin to harden, and causes a patient’s joints to contract. The most commonly affected areas are the areas between the ankles and the thighs and the wrists and the upper arms. Symptoms develop slowly and can result in chronic pain and loss of mobility. The following are the most common symptoms:
  • Intense burning, itching, and sharp pains in affected areas.
  • Swelling and tightening of the skin.
  • Severe thickening and hardening of the skin.
  • Reduced internal organ function.
  • Blood clotting.
  • Yellowing of the white surface of eyes.
