Video Gaming Company Settles Sexual Harassment Lawsuit for $100 Million
Riot Games, Inc., a prominent video game company, is finally being held responsible for its severe mistreatment of female employees. The company, facing a class action lawsuit brought against it by former female employees, must pay $100 million to resolve the litigation.
About the Lawsuit
The lawsuit, which was filed in 2018, alleged the company promoted and permitted a culture of toxicity and misconduct towards female employees, including sexual harassment. In certain instances, executives in the company retaliated against female employees who rejected their sexual advances by having them fired.
Riot attempted to settle in 2019 for $10 million, but California’s Department of Labor intervened and argued that the settlement who was not sufficient as it believed there to be more than 2,300 current and former female employees with claims. The new settlement of $100 million will be distributed to these women following the Court’s approval.
In addition to the payout, the company agreed to undertake workplace policy reforms including having an outside third party oversee its human resource department for three years. Riot acknowledged that it had not lived up to the values of the company and needed to take responsibility.
This case is an example that women should not have to suffer inequity and harassment in silence. Legal action can bring about positive change.
