Safety Tips For The New School Year
A new school year has begun and students are getting back into their weekday routine.
While some kids take the bus to school and others walk their commute, all students must be aware of the safety measures that should always be taken to ensure that they are not involved in accidents.
Tips for students include those involving bus stops, pedestrian safety, and motorist safety. Below are some of the tips that you will find promoted by the National Safety Council and First Student:
- Students who walk to school should cross at corners where there are traffic signals and designated crosswalks
- Students should avoid distracted walking, including texting while walking
- Students riding the bus should find a seat and sit down, refrain from loud talking

At the bus stop…
- Walk to the bus stop; Never run
- Walk on the sidewalk; If sidewalk is not available, walk in left-facing traffic
- Arrive at bus stop five minutes ahead of time
- Wait in safe area, away from traffic
- Never speak to strangers at bus stop
- Only cross traffic when bus lights are flashing
- Look left, right, then left again before crossing traffic
On the bus…
- Walk straight to bus seat and sit down
- Do not distract bus driver
- Never throw things on the bus
- Keep aisle way clear
- Always listen to bus driver
Exiting the bus…
- Do not run when exiting bus
- Walk straight home from bus stop
- Only exit at designated stop
- If item is left off bus, do not return to the bus; driver may not see child
- If item is dropped near bus, tell driver before attempting to pick it up
It is critically important for parents to share these safety tips with their children. Make sure your children know how to properly act when walking to and from the bus stop, as well as riding the bus. Safety starts with the parents educating their child, and it continues throughout the year through reinforcement.
