On Monday, the U.S. EPA started to test 14 sites in Clyde, Ohio for contamination that could be the source of about 37 childhood cancer cases in the immediate area. A majority of the surveyed locales were previously dumpsites but closed in the 1970s.
Formulated Products had a vacant low where hundreds of chemical drums were removed in the 1990s and has been believed to be a cause of the outbreak of child cancer cases since 1996.
Currently, Whirlpool is the largest company in the region of Clyde and is being investigated by the EPA for violations that have resulted in sick or dying children.
Steve Wolfe, the on-scene coordinator for the EPA, stated that the public can expect results from the tests in late spring or early summer. Warren Brown, Sandusky County Administrator, lost his 11-year-old daughter Alexa to cancer in 2009. “The U.S. EPA study can produce only good results,” explained Brown.
