Bikes For Kids: Inspirational Stories Of Toledo Youth

The Charles E. Boyk Law Office has created a contest for the youth in the Toledo area. Bikes for Kids is a summer campaign that the law office has run in partnership with Wersell’s Bike Shop. Over the summer, 10 brand new bicycles are being given to deserving kids throughout northwest Ohio.

Kids are entered into the contest via a contact form on the Charles E. Boyk Law Office website. In 150 words or less, those who wish to nominate a child write why they think the child should win a brand new bicycle.

The entries that we have received have been very inspiring. We have amazing youth in our community and our law office is happy to have had the opportunity to learn more about these amazing children.

Inspirational Kids in Northwest Ohio

he July edition of our monthly newsletter highlighted two of the children who received a bike through the Bikes for Kids contest. It also highlighted the meaning behind “Kayla’s Bike” which was presented by Carly Meeker to one of the Bikes for Kids Winners. Carly is the 10-year-old sister of Kayla Meeker, a former Bikes for Kids contest winner.

Kayla took her own life at 16-years-old due to cyber-bullying, and the bike presented by her sister to a 2014 winner was in Kayla’s honor.

“Kayla’s Bike” was awarded to Destiny Rivera, a 13-year-old girl from Findlay who recently had a battle with leukemia. Destiny had been nominated by her mother who noted Destiny’s strength after being diagnosed with monosomy and m myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) in November that then progressed to acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Throughout the treatment, Destiny kept an upbeat attitude.

Another winner of the 2014 Bikes for Kids contest fought a health battle. Khyle Johnson was born with bilateral congenital cataracts and has had eye surgeries since just six weeks old due to the condition. Throughout the surgeries and doctor visits, Khyle keeps a positive attitude and never complains. She was nominated by her mother who said she is the most lovable child you will ever meet.

Our office is thankful to have had the opportunity to meet these inspiring young ladies. We ask our readers to nominate a child they know who exhibits the same resilience as Destiny and Khyle.
