Labor Day Weekend Statistics & Safety Tips Released

Labor Day weekend marks the end of summer for many, and gives families and friends one last chance to have a long weekend full of sun, barbeques, and fun. Labor Day weekend also involves many people traveling to destinations, whether it is the beach or a family member’s house, which increases the traffic on roadways, as well as the risk for accidents.

The National Safety Council has released its estimate of fatalities from motor vehicle accidents for Labor Day weekend, beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, August 30, and ending at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, September 2.

Just by buckling up, the National Safety Council estimates that 143 lives may be saved, and an additional 99 lives could be saved if all wore seat belts.

The release of these estimates is done to spark attention toward safe driving practices in hopes that drivers will exercise these practices as they travel to and from their destination with their family.

The National Safety Council is also sharing tips for Labor Day drivers that will help to keep them safe on the roadway:

  • Establish and enforce a distraction-free zone, especially in cars equipped with electronic devices including cell phones, GPS systems, and other in-vehicle technology
  • Make sure all passengers are buckled up and children are in safety seats appropriate for their age and size
  • Allow plenty of travel time to avoid frustration and diminish the impulse to speed
  • Drive defensively and exercise caution, especially during inclement weather
  • Designate a non-drinking driver or plan for alternative transportation, such as a taxi

Our Ohio car accident attorneys believe that if drivers across the state exercise safe driving over the holiday weekend, there will be significantly less car accidents. Since we have seen firsthand the effect that a car accident can have on one’s life, we fully support the National Safety Council as they spread safe driving knowledge.

If you are going on a weekend trip over Labor Day, please remember to drive safe, buckle up, and avoid distraction. We want your weekend to be full of sun and fun, not car accident injuries.
