New Boyk Employee Profile: Crystal Buckman

Her name is Crystal Buckman and she is an intake specialist at Charles Boyk Law Offices. When asked about her job and responsibilities, she says, “I listen to people’s stories and try to help them the best way possible, whether it be through our firm or finding someone who might be able to help them.”

“I’m kind of like a listening ear. I let people tell their stories and find out who would be best to help them, whether it be one of our attorneys, or if it’s something that we don’t handle or can’t
directly help them with, we try to refer them to someone who can help them,” Crystal says, “I actually grew up in the middle of nowhere, Alcona, Michigan. It is about an hour away from the next city, which is Alpena, Michigan, which is where I was born.”

Her grandparents still live there. She moved to the Toledo area when she was 8 years old to be closer to her family. She went to Whitmer High School and graduated in 2019. Her first job was at McDonald’s, and she worked her way up to management at McDonald’s. She started college but wasn’t sure about her course of study, and decided to take some time to figure out her path.

She moved to Ypsilanti in support of her sister as she pursued her master’s degree and started working in a law firm that handled estate planning, veterans’ benefits, Medicaid, and social security-disability cases.

Crystal ultimately moved back to Toledo and saw the job opening at Charles Boyk Law. She is thinking of going back to school to study accounting with a specialization of auditing. “I’m really good with numbers and organizing numbers and seeing discrepancies. So I want to do something along those lines. And I really like helping people.”

Crystal adopted a rescue dog named Leah. “She was very ill when we got her, and now she is going strong,” she says. “Leah is a lab and Beagle mix who is now six years old. She has a brother named Nemo, who is a puppy. He’s only two years old, and he’s full-bred Staffordshire Terrier. He’s 90 pounds pure muscle, and is my parents’ dog. They just play a lot together in the backyard.”

She describes Leah as terrifyingly intelligent and believes she can understand you word for word. “She really loves coming to work with me and visiting, and she gets all the pets,” says Crystal. “She, in fact, knows the exact route of to get the most pets on the way to my office. And she gets very upset if no one pets her… She cries anytime someone walks past, so I have to stop for a moment be like, it’s okay. We all love you, but we’ve got work to do.”

In her spare time, Crystal likes crocheting and doing Diamond Dot paintings. “You paint with little diamond stickers, so it’s a sticky picture. Then you just put little diamonds on it, and it creates an image,” she said. “It’s really fun.” She enjoys true crime and unsolved mystery podcasts, documentaries and older TV shows, like Supernatural, Bones & NCIS.

Crystal says she knew she wanted to work here during her initial interview. “We clicked instantly… We talked about the core values of Charles Boyk Law Offices, which are written on the wall, and I really liked how they integrated dogs at the office. I thought that was really wonderful, really fun, she explained. “And I really like just kind of how friendly everyone was…That was something that really stuck out to me.”

Welcome Crystal. We’re glad you’re part of our team!
