Boyk Law Makes Donation to Diabetes Youth Services Endowment

Charles Boyk Law Offices recently made a donation to Diabetes Youth Services’ Endowment Fund in the name of John Searle, one of our clients.

Diabetes Youth Services (DYS) was founded with the mission of connecting families, educating communities and supporting children living with type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes. It is a chronic condition. where the pancreas makes little or no insulin, the hormone the body uses to allow sugar (glucose) to enter cells to produce energy.

“In November, Diabetes Youth Services celebrated Diabetes Awareness Month and its 40th Anniversary,” says Kathy Lathrop, the organization’s Executive Director. “From inception in 1984, with just a few children attending a single camp session, DYS now positively impacts more than 2,000 people in our community every year!”

“It is quite phenomenal that this organization is located in and serves Northwest Ohio,” says John Searle, a Boyk Law client, and type 1 diabetic for over 50 years. “They go into schools to help diabetic students manage their disease. They also educate classes, teachers, and school nurses about diabetes.”

“Demand for diabetes education in schools continues to grow,” says Kathy Lathrop. “DYS meets that need by educating more than 800 school nurses and teachers on ways to support students with type 1 diabetes during the school day.”

Diabetes Youth Services primarily serves 37 counties in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan. DYS also hosts camps and workshops to help young diabetics, and their families manage their disease.

“More than 50% of campers receive scholarship support to attend. We can proudly say that no child has EVER been excluded for financial reasons,” says Lathrop. “However, DYS could not support kids and families without the help of generous contributors like Boyk Law.”

The DYS endowment fund was established in 2024, in honor of the 40th anniversary of Diabetes Youth Services. Income from the endowment will support essential DYS programs and services.

“As we plan for the future, we are focused on building an endowment fund to provide sustainable long-term funding for DYS programs,” says Lathrop. “Thank you to Boyk Law for joining us in our commitment to the children of today AND tomorrow.”

Charles Boyk Law Offices is proud to make a donation to DYS Endowment Fund to support this worthy cause in the name of John Searle. For more information about Diabetes Youth Services, visit dys4kids.org
