Safety First

Between 2011 and 2012, the number of fatal crashes in Wood County has increased, according to Wood County Safe Communities.

Compared to the same time last year, Wood County has had nine additional fatal crashed for a total of sixteen for 2012.  A total of six males and 11 females have lost their lives this year compared to six males and four females this same time last year.

The spike in the statistics officials say are a result in a number of reasons from distraction, to people crossing lanes or high speeds.  The hot spots for the wrecks are scattered across the county at such intersections as Route 20 and Lime City Road.

Wood County has been able to launch a Safe Communities Program thanks to the $35,533 in grants from the Ohio Department of Public Safety Traffic Safety Office.  The program will help educate the public on the dangers of not wearing seat belts, driving while impaired, distracted driving, as well as increasing motorcycle safety awareness.
