Jury Awards Survivor Of Bus Crash $7.2 Million

While all of the motor vehicle collision cases handled by the Ohio accident lawyers at the Charles Boyk Law Offices are tragic, often the most devastating crashes are those involving several vehicles that are larger in size than a standard car or motorcycle. Because of their sheer size, truck and bus accidents can have some of the most gruesome outcomes, resulting in significant personal injury or even death.

Such are the circumstances surrounding a recent rollover bus accident that resulted in the injury of one Colorado woman.

In December 2007, Ashley Reedy was a passenger on a Greyhound Bus traveling through rural Texas in less-than-favorable conditions. According to Reedy, the bus driver was using his cell phone while behind the wheel despite the icy conditions on the Wheeler County interstate. While distracted by his cell phone, the driver lost control of the bus and it began to roll over. As a result of the impact, Reedy sustained serious injuries to her head, neck, and back.

During the trial, the Ohio car accident attorney representing Reedy successfully proved that Greyhound had hired an unqualified driver and didn’t receive proper training. Investigations into the driver’s cell phone history showed that in the three hours leading up to the collision, he used his cell phone 17 times. Additionally, it was clear that Greyhound never looked into his driver’s past record on the road. Just before being hired by Greyhound, the driver received three speeding convictions.

The jury awarded Reedy with $2.2 million in damages, after finding that Greyhound and its driver were grossly negligent and caused the crash.
