Be Aware! Cadmium In Jewelry A Poison Risk For Children

Recent reports have shown that children can be exposed to as much as 100 times the recommended limit of cadmium when they either put inexpensive jewelry in their mouth or accidentally swallow it.

The safety authorities are now investigating the presence of cadmium in children’s jewelry imported from China.

Investigation shows that some Chinese manufacturers have been substituting cadmium for lead in inexpensive charm bracelets and pendants that are sold throughout the United States and also in Canada.

Cadmium, which is a heavy metal, can cause kidney, lung, bone and liver disease. All exposures to cadmium should be avoided.

It is a concern because it accumulates in the body over our lifetime and especially dangerous in the younger years because children’s digestive system are more efficient at absorbing it.
