April Is Distracted Driving Awareness Month
The Charles E. Boyk Law Offices, LLC strives to increase awareness of the dangers of distracted driving. We have continuously posted blogs that highlight the dangers of distracted driving and the tragic outcomes that may result.
With April being Distracted Driving Awareness Month, we plan to provide information to readers regarding the dangers of distracted driving and how they may avoid this dangerous habit.
The National Safety Council provides information on their website regarding distracted driving. According to their website, thousands of people die every year because drivers continue to use their cell phones while driving.
Some of the main things they urge readers to think about are below:
Stop using cell phones while driving
Recognize that hands-free devices offer no safety benefit
Understand the dangers of the cognitive distraction to the brain
Tell others about the dangers of cell phone distracted driving
Drive Cell Free: Take the Pledge
The National Safety Council provides a pledge to drive cell free that they ask people to take. The NSC estimates that nearly 25% of car crashes involve the use of cell phones.
Driving is not a simple task and takes your full attention, eyes on the road, hands on the wheel, and brain focused on driving. Those who talk on the phone are cognitively distracted, which may lead to them failing to see up to 50% of the environment around them, including stop signs, pedestrians and red lights.

Crashes Involving Cell Phones
The NSC also has infographics that explain the use of cell phones in fatal crashes. The infographic addressing the underreporting of cell phone use explain that there are three levels of crashes involving cell phones:
Known – driver admitted phone use
Suspected – driver didn’t admit to phone use
Unknown – one car cash, not witnesses, driver deceased
