Andrea Young Talks to Scott High School Students about Renting a Home

Attorney Andrea Young joined other representatives from the Toledo Bar Association and spoke with Scott High School’s Junior and Senior classes. The subject of the presentation was informing the students of their rights as renters as they look ahead toward moving out into their own rental homes after graduation.

The Toledo Bar Association also featured guest speakers Monica Yvonne, Supervising Attorney at Legal Aid of Western Ohio, and Maggie Humphrey, TBA’s Director of Pro Bono & Community Engagement.

The speakers discussed the rights and responsibilities of renters and landlords and how to handle rental disputes. Andrea Young advised students to take pictures of pre-existing damage in the apartment before signing their lease to help them get their security deposits back. She also explained what landlords can and can’t do. “They can’t change your locks or shut off utilities. They can’t enter your home improperly without giving you notice they are going to do so, and they can’t remove you without a court-ordered eviction,” she told the students. Young also told them how renters should respond to issues. “If any of this is going on, contact an attorney. Contact Legal Aid. There are resources out there. Don’t try to handle it on your own.”
