Unanimous Vote Will Lead to Safer Cribs | Toledo, Ohio child accident attorneys

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission posted a unanimous vote on Wednesday in favor of stricter mandatory standards for cribs. This vote comes in an effort to keep children safer while they sleep.

The new rules, which will likely go into effect next year, will eliminate drop side cribs and mandate better mattress support, sturdier hardware and better quality wood for crib construction. The cribs the Commission is looking to outlaw pose suffocation and fall risks.

These mandates will rend almost every crib currently produced in the U.S. as not up to code. Retailers who currently have any of the affected cribs in stock will have to stop selling them once the new rules pass. Hotels, day care centers and other businesses that use cribs deemed not up to code will have to replace their current furniture stock with safer models.

A final vote on the mandate is expected in December with the new rules taking effect next summer.

Although this vote will likely cost retailers, business owners and consumers extra money when cribs have to be replaced, our Toledo, Ohio child accident attorneys want to stress the seriousness of the injuries malfunctioning cribs can cause. We have handled several cases where children were either injured or killed due to faulty cribs.

If you or someone you know has a child who was injured or killed after a crib malfunction call 800.637.8170 to speak with one of our attorneys.
