Tow Truck Driver Killed

46-year-old Joseph Ricciardelli, who worked for Emerald Towing, was on the scene to assist the Highway Patrol by removing the vehicle of a suspect that had been arrested.
Ricciardellli had secured the vehicle on his tow truck and was picking up the safety cones when 59-year-old Johnnie Knowles, who was traveling north on the highway in a 1995 Toyota Camry, swerved left in an attempt to avoid a rear-end collision when the vehicle in front of him slowed down.
Knowles then hit Ricciardellli who was still in the lane which was closed down.
Ricciardelli was air lifted to Delray Medical Center, where he died.
Knowles sustained minor injuries and was taken to Bethesda Memorial Hospital.
The fatal accident investigation is still open and no charges have been filed at this time.
