Ohio Highway Patrol & Motorcycle Safety Awareness

Ohio is finally able to enjoy the end to winter and warmer weather. When spring arrives, the motorcycles begin to hit the roadways.

With motorcycle season upon us, the Ohio Highway Patrol is focusing on motorcycle safety awareness. Efforts to promote safety have increases over the last few years, according to a recent article in the Morning Journal. With approximately 12,000 registered motorcycle riders ready to enjoy the warm weather on their motorcycles, it is extremely important to promote safety and reduce the likelihood of accidents.

According to Lt. Travis Hughes, four years ago, half of the fatal crashes in Lorain County were a result of motorcycle crashes.

“Obviously, when the number is at 50-percent, it requires you to take notice and take some initiative to address the problem,” Lt. Hughes said.

Motorcycle Safety in Ohio

It is extremely important for motorcyclists to have the proper safety gear when they are on their bikes. One of the biggest reasons for motorcycle accidents is the fact that other vehicles do not see the motorcycle and a collision occurs. Even the safest of motorcycle riders with the cleanest of driving records are at a risk for serious accidents due to other drivers on the roadway.

Due to the risk of being involved in an accident, riders should wear the appropriate safety gear including:

  • Helmet
  • Eye protection
  • Protective jackets
  • Pants to prevent abrasion
  • Riding gloves
  • Raingear
  • Over-the-ankle boots
