Nine sent to hospital after Margaretta crash involving elder caravan

A two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Ohio 4 and Mason Road sent nine people to the hospital on Friday.

Among those injured included seven elderly clients of the Alternative Care Center in Sandusky.

A van the clients rode inside had stopped on Ohio 4 to turn left onto Mason Road when a truck clobbered the van from behind.

Firefighters from three departments worked to get the senior citizens out of the van and on their way to Firelands Regional Medical Center. They also helped unload the van of walkers and other personal items of the occupants.

One of the van occupants was subsequently airlifted to Mercy St. Vincent's Medical Center in Toledo with serious injuries. The truck's driver, Dennis Siesel, Bellevue, and the van's driver, Jerry Gowdy, Sandusky, also sought treatment at Firelands.
