With May being Motorcycle Awareness Month, our office finds no better time than now to share a refresher to readers on the safety tips surrounding motorcycles.
Our office has represented countless motorcycle accidents after they have suffered injuries. Having helped these clients to receive compensation after being involved in accidents, we have come to appreciate the safety precautions and equipment that is available to motorcyclists.
It is extremely important for motorcyclists to wear protective gear when they are riding. Below we have listed some of the safety gear that every rider should have on when on their motorcycle:
- Helmet – not required by law in Ohio
- Eye protection
- Protective jackets – prevents abrasion
- Long pants
- Riding gloves
- Over the ankle boots – protects from bike
In addition to safety gear, it is important for motorcyclists to be visible on the road. A major cause for many motorcycle accidents that often result in serious injuries or fatalities is another motorist’s failure to see the motorcyclist. Some of the steps that a motorcyclist can take in ensuring that they are visible is making sure that their headlights work (checking regularly), and to use the highlights during both daylight hours and nighttime hours. The clothing that the motorcyclist wears should also include reflective pieces that will make them visible to others on the road.
We also remind motorcyclists to be aware of the changing conditions of the roadway. The SEE strategy should be utilized by all motorcyclists, which stands for Search, Evaluations, and Execute.
Motorcycle Accident in Ohio
While we can share safety tips to motorcyclists, it is a two-way street when it comes to accidents on the roadway. As explained earlier, many accidents involving motorcycles are caused by other motorists (those driving other vehicles). If you or your loved one has been in a motorcycle accident that was caused by another person, call our lawyers at 800.637.8170. We can help you to take the necessary steps toward compensation that is deserved for the injuries sustained. We also advise requesting a free copy of The Ohio Motorcycle Accident Book to serve as a resource throughout the process.
