Man Killed When Trench Collapsed | Toledo Ohio Workers’ Compensation Attorney

Graeme Scott was laying pipes into a trench in Glasgow's Cranhill Park when the trench collapsed.

A Co-worker of Scott, Thomas Brand jumped down into the trench and could tried to save him, however he was unsuccessful. Scott had been covered in debris and soil.

Scott died of a chest injury and probable suffocation caused by the trench collapsing on him.

Reports say that on the day of Scott's death, under the direction of foreman William Parry, neither of the two trench boxes, given to the men to work inside while in the trench, were used.

Police said, "The purpose of the trench box is to provide a safe working environment for those working within the trench by supporting the side walls and preventing soil slipping into the trench."

Sheriff John McCormick reported: "The death of Graeme Scott was entirely unnecessary and preventable had trench boxes and edge protection been used and the spoil deposited more than three metres from the trench edge in accordance with accepted good practice.

"Unfortunately, this event is one more example of health and safety practice, training and procedures being ignored in the interests of expediency with lethal results."
