A multiple-vehicle accident on the Ohio Turnpike last week left one man dead. There still have been no charges filed at this point, but alcohol and drugs are not believed to be a factor in the accident.

The accident that involved five vehicles happened at 9:21 a.m. on the Ohio Turnpike in a construction zone about three miles east of the Fremont exit. Of the five vehicles involved, three were semi-trucks.

Sgt. Michael Ramsey of the Ohio Highway Patrol said, “Vehicles were slowing down and stopping for the construction zone.” However, a semi-truck involved in the crash was not able to stop his vehicle in time and ended up colliding with the back of the semi-truck in front of him. This then caused a chain accident with two other vehicles.

The fifth vehicle involved in the crash was an F-150 pickup truck that ended up hitting the semi that had started the entire crash from behind. The passenger of the pickup, Erwin Kuhns, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The driver of the pickup, Paul Schoff, was transported to Memorial Hospital of Fremont. There were two other passengers in the pickup as well, 18-year-old David Kuhns and 14-year-old Albert Kurtz.

The semi that had started the chain reaction was driven by 50-year-old Angelo Muscarello III. He only suffered minor injuries according to Sgt. Ramsey.

This multi-vehicle accident caused the westbound lanes of the turnpike to be closed for much of the day.

Our office’s thoughts and prayers are with the Kuhns family during this difficult time. We have represented countless families in the position that this family has found themselves in and we know there is nothing easy about it. An untimely death such as this is overwhelming and unimaginable.

We also wish all those involved in the accident who have been injured as speedy of a recovery as possible.
