CPSC Wants To Stop Daily Table Saw Amputations | Toledo, Ohio Personal Injury Attorney

The CPSC is calling into question why the power-tool industry and safety standards groups have not done more to address the extremely serious and growing problem of debilitating table-saw injuries. The CPSC estimates that there are an average of ten finger amputations a day; that's just from table saws used by consumers.

It has been reported that Steven Gass has invented a technology that stops blades when body parts are detected. He persuaded the CPSC to grant his petition for rule-making during the Bush Administration, but the CPSC never drafted any rules. As a result a new vote will now be required by the commission. Sally Greenberg, executive director of the National Consumers League said that "There's a pattern of injury, a safety technology that can address it, and it's affordable." The group is joining Gass to push for a federal rule requiring all table saws to detect flesh and stop blades before they cut into it.   The cost to society for table saw related injuries are estimated at $2 billion a year.
