Checking GPS While Driving

We all know that texting while driving is dangerous, and even against the law in Ohio. But what about checking your GPS while driving?

You’re still typing on your phone or GPS device, you’re still reading from the device, and it still takes your attention from the roadway.

Using a navigation system, or GPS is considered one cause of distracted driving according to Distraction.gov. While it is not as bad as texting, it still takes the driver’s eyes and attention from the roadway.

Distraction.gov also has a list of each state’s laws, where you can check to see which bans are in effect across the United States.

So what should you do when you’re driving? Ohio’s law does not ban the use of a navigation system while driving, but our office advises you to get your GPS ready before leaving the driveway or parking lot.

If you must change the address while driving, or you get turned around, the best thing to do is to pull off the road to a safe area and get your bearings.

We remind you that distracted driving causes thousands of accidents every year. Be safe on the roadways and remember that the text, call, or even GPS can wait until you pull off the roadway.
