Cell phones are a distraction while driving in Ohio PART 1 | Swanton, Ohio accident lawyers

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there are more than 1 million U.S. drivers talking on handheld cell phones right now.

Cell phones are a known driving distraction, which has created concern about safety. According to edmunds.com, as reported by Joanne Helperin, dozens of countries have banned the use of cell phones while driving. In the United States, California, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Utah, and Washington, D.C. have banned in-vehicle cell phone use. Dozens of other states have banned use of cell phones by minors and bus drivers.

A 2005 controlled study of Australian drivers found that people who were talking on cell phones were four times as likely to get into a serious accident. In 1997, a study of Canadian drivers linked cell phone usage with increased property damage. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reported that phone conversation tasks typically decreased reaction times, travel speeds, and increased lane deviations and steering wheel movements.
