Kimberly VanSlembrouck is grateful for the $144 million jury verdict against William Beaumont Hospital that'll ensure her brain-injured daughter gets the care she needs for life.
The lawsuit was filed in 2006 on behalf of Markell VanSlembrouck who is now 15. She suffered severe brain injuries at the Royal Oak hospital during birth because a cesarean should have been performed on Kimberly. But instead, the 10-pound, 12-ounce Markell was forced through the birth canal, causing her to suffer a fractured clavicle, hemorrhaging and severe brain trauma.
The civil jury consisted of eight members. They reached the verdict Tuesday after three days of deliberations in the three-week trial in Oakland County Circuit Court.
The hospital disagrees with the jury's verdict and plans an appeal claiming the injuries are genetic.
